Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox or Xeomin, also known as botulinum toxin therapy, is an injection that contains the toxin produced by Clostridium botulinum. When given in small doses, this active ingredient stops the transmission of nerve signals or muscle activity to get the desired results.

Dr. Gettler uses Botox for facial rejuvenation and hyperhidrosis. He tailors your Botox treatment plan to match your specific beauty or medical needs so you get the best possible results.

What are the cosmetic uses for Botox?

For facial rejuvenation, Dr. Gettler uses Xeomin to temporarily reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the upper portion of the face. More specifically, your:

  • Crow’s feet at the corners of your eyes
  • Frown lines between your eyebrows
  • Forehead wrinkles

These lines and wrinkles are known as dynamic wrinkles, which are the lines and wrinkles that develop from repeated facial expressions.

When you frown or squint, your facial muscles create groves that fold your skin. As you get older and your skin loses its strength and elasticity, the constant folding leads to more permanent lines and wrinkles.

For cosmetic purposes, Dr. Gettler injects small amounts of Xeomin into specific areas of your face to temporarily stop the muscle movement that creates lines and wrinkles. That gives your skin time to relax and smooth itself out.

At Advanced Medical and Cosmetic Dermatology, Dr. Gettler administers all Xeomin injections, which take only a few minutes and require no downtime. Results may appear within a day or two and last up to four months.

Dr. Gettler recommends returning to the office once you notice the effects wearing off. Repeating Botox or Xeomin injections for facial wrinkles reduces your risk of developing new lines and creases.

What are the medical uses of Botox?

Dr. Gettler uses Botox to treat hyperhidrosis, which is a condition that causes excessive sweating. For these injections, Dr. Gettler administers them into your armpit.

The injections work by temporarily stopping the nerve transmissions that trigger the sweat glands in the treated area. Dr. Gettler may also inject Botox into the hands or feet.

Your injections may help reduce excess sweating anywhere from three to 12 months.
